Back in the mid 90s, when I got into cycling, there was only a small handful of brands making premium cycling apparel. Pearl Izumi was one of those brands, and I owned a lot of their jerseys and shorts. I eventually migrated away from cycling kits and toward more casual baggy shorts and button up shirts for riding, while Pearl Izumi stuck closer to the club and race look. Their recently added Versa collection brings Pearl Izumi much closer to my personal tastes in riding apparel, and the Versa Quilted Hoodie is my favorite piece in the collection.

The Versa Quilted Hoodie is no doubt a piece of cycling gear, with a slim fit, and cycling-specific features like a full size rear pocket (thanks!), but it’s also frequently served as an everyday option off the bike. I’ve worn it on some pretty cold rides this winter, including a recent snowy mountain bike ride with temps in the mid teens, wearing just a lightweight base layer underneath. The zippered chest pocket fits an iPhone 8 Plus without a case, and has an extra flap over the zipper for additional protection. Hand pockets also include snaps, securing gloves or other small items. The large back pocket accommodates a lightweight shell, snacks, and other extras. The hood is soft, comfortable, and zips up nice and secure around my face.
