Jam legends Widespread Panic returned to Colorado last weekend, opening for The Rolling Stones at Empower Field at Mile High, followed by their annual three-night run at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Sunday marked the bands 76th appearance at Red Rocks, and their 72nd consecutive sold out show at the renowned Morrison venue. That “NEVER MISS A SUNDAY SHOW” energy was in the air, and the packed house was treated to nearly three hours of classic Panic.
The first set was highlighted by an early set jam from “Holden Oversoul” into “Action Man, and the combo of first-time-played “Little By Little”, the opening track on the band’s latest studio release, Snake Oil King, that segued into a massive “Flat Foot Flewzy” to close the one hour set.
An emotional “Don’t Be Denied” opened the 90-plus minute second set that saw multiple multi-song segues and extended jams. I always love a good “Guilded Splinters”, and this one clocked in at nearly 16 minutes, and was sandwiched between “Blue Carousel” and “Machine”, in a four song combo that ended with “Barstools and Dreamers.” The highlight of the night was certainly the late set uniterrupted 35-minute run of “Coconut”, “Saint Ex”, “Ride Me High”, and “Blue Indian.” Warren Zevon’s “Lawyers, Guns, and Money” closed out the second set.
The 20-minute encore opened with, “Life As A Tree”, another new song from Snake Oil King followed by longtime setlist staples “Pigeons” and “Postcard” to bring another three-night Red Rocks run to a triumphant close.
