Pearl Izumi’s X-Alp Seek VII isn’t the stiffest cycling shoe on the market. But that’s the idea. These versatile lace-up shoes are designed for those of us who spend a fair amount of our rides off the bike. The X-Alp VII Seek has a loose and playful feel and they’re noticeably well ventilated. Something I really appreciated on hot mid-summer rides.
I really like these shoes for commuting and beer rides. They’re also my go-to shoes when I’m shooting mountain bike races, when I spend all day on my feet, and run back and forth between photo zones along singletrack trails. I’d be plenty comfortable relying on these shoes on a multi-day Fruita outing.

Room for improvement?
I appreciate the lace stash, but I’d love to see a small pull tab added. And while we’re on the topic of shoe laces, those nubby laces that Pearl Izumi uses (used to use, RIP!) on their running shoes would be an extra nice touch!
Soul Mates
Commuters, Mountain bikers who like to stop and smell the roses (and/or enjoy a trail beer!)
Bottom Line
With a loose and playful fit, ample ventilation, and a trail running shoe vibe, I can definitely get behind the X-Alp Seek as an all-around cycling shoe. I wear them on our local backyard singletrack, commutes, and to the tap room, and they’re just as comfortable off the bike as on. Arch support is decent, but if you’re looking to upgrade, slap a pair of Super Feet Carbon insoles into these shoes for the ultimate setup.
