You probably know Therm-a-rest more for their sleeping pads, but their new line of Slacker™ hammocks should also be on your radar. What sets these hammocks apart is the lightweight, soft, ultra comfortable polyester fabric (many others are made from nylon, similar to tent material). The Slacker stuffs down to the size of a couple of beer cans and folds into its own stuff pocket, so you have no excuse not to stuff it into your pack, you know, “just in case.” Aluminum carabiners are also included.

HANGING KIT

You can always use your own climbing rope, but I suggest purchasing the Slackers Suspenders Hanging Kit. It’s inexpensive ($30) and makes hanging your hammock quick and easy.

RAIN FLY

I spent three cold, rainy nights in Fruita, Colorado this April, sleeping in a Slacker hammock, with a rainfly attached. I could not have been more comfortable, and swore after that trip that I’d never sleep on the ground again!

PRO TIP: With air flowing under a hammock, it can get colder than you think at night. I run a Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite SV sleeping pad for overnights in a hammock. It’s super light and compact, and adds extra comfort and protection from the cold.

BUG SHELTER

A family camping trip in Nebraska this summer, spent under a canopy of enormous Cottonwood trees provided about a thousand options for hammock locations. There were also approximately four billion mosquitos. Buy a bug shelter. You won’t regret it!

BOTTOM LINE

Whether it’s for chilling at a festival or used as a primary shelter, hammocks are incredibly popular right now. There are a lot of great options on the market. The soft polyester fabric, available accessories, and Therm-a-Rest’s reputation for high quality gear sets the Slacker apart from others and makes it one of my favorites. It’s more compact than many single person tents, and very light weight, so it’s a great option for bikepackers, hikers, and backpackers looking to replace a tent as their primary shelter.
