After park skiing most of my life, I’ve recently begun to make the transition out of the terrain park and into the backcountry. After some tough injuries and aging a bit, I can’t throw my body around as much as I used to. At this years On-Snow demo, I made the point to test out as many Pow/BackCountry skis as possible. From local colorado brands like Icelantic and RMU to big name hitters like Line and Atomic, here are a few of the my favorite skis for 2016/17.

4FRNT

After 12 years as an independent, skier owned brand, 4FRNT is really coming into their own, creating incredible skis for every part of the mountain. Based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, 4FRNT has quickly been pushing style and innovation becoming one of the major players of the Ski Industry.

Years of R&D has led to 4FRNT’s “Vibe-Veil” technology, introduced last year. The VibeVeil elastic membrane situated in the tips of their rockered skis dramatically reduces chatter and weak edge hold, commonly the result of extended negative radius profiles in ski tips when used in varied to firm snow conditions. Having wanted to try them for years, I finally got the opportunity to test out some 4FRNT’s at the SIA on-snow demo.

4FRNT KYE 110

The KYE were in their own category in terms of playfulness allover the mountain. Coming from a park background these skis were great for jibbing off of cliffs and powder while also keeping stable in the steeps, trees and carving well in every condition available.

Icelantic

Started in Evergreen, Colo. out of founder Ben Anderson’s parents’ garage, Icelantic has progressively become a staple in the ski scene through their various community programs and an alternative perspective on what skiing is supposed to be. From their beautifully original artwork to the hand crafted skis made right here in Colorado, Icelantic continues to spread the good word of appreciating the outdoors and evolving the human existence through an appreciation of the arts.

2016/17 Icelantic Nomad

Icelantic Nomad 125

These fatties were my next favorite skis tried at the on-snow demo. Super, fun and playful and a wide 125 to sit right up on the fresh or blow through the crunch. Their balanced flex on 2mm of camber underfoot with rocked tip/tail offered the perfect combo for any conditions.
