An absolutely packed Gothic Theatre crowd greeted All Them Witches from Nashville, TN Saturday, Feb 5th, shouting “just like witches at black masses” while Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” played over the PA as the band made their way to the stage, backdropped with drummer Robby Staebler’s distinctive artwork. The band eased into their ninety minute set, slowly building their way toward fiery, extended versions of songs spanning their entire discography, and seamless segues, capped with mid-set takes on “Diamond” into “1X1.” Ben McCleod wielded his new Banker flying-v guitar much of the set, adding blues-drenched riffs all night. Allan Van Cleave, recently back in the ATW fold, interweaved that vintage keyboard sound that helped define the band, adding an extra level of excitement to the night for dedicated fans. Mid-set takes on the serene “Everest”, played solo by McCleod, followed by “The Children of Coyote Woman” with bassist Charles Parks on guitar and Van Cleave on electric fiddle calmed things down a bit, Parks thanking the crowd for letting them mellow out, and confessing after the two songs that “they’re too old to head bang for ninety minutes straight.” The band got straight back to work, closing out the set with the tranquil “Rob’s Dream”, and its slow build into stomping rocker. The intensity peaked again with the thunderous riffs of “When God Comes Back” working the pit into a frenzy. Sleeping Through the War standout “Bulls” closed out the set. A two-song encore of “Fishbelly 86 Onions” into longtime fan favorite “Elk.Blood.Heart” brought the night to a close. Toward the end of their set Parks thanked the crowd, remembering their ten year anniversary as a band is in the next few days, and that he can’t believe they’ve actually made it this far. It’s no surprise for this longtime fan, as I simmer in last night’s setlist, and reminisce about the first time I saw ATW, at this same venue back in 2015. This band keeps building and progressing on the unique sound they’ve been crafting over the past ten years, and all signs point to their energy not slowing down any time soon.
