Holdfast.
On Thursday, local Denver band Holdfast. hosted their first annual holiday party at the Bluebird Theater. Fans showed up in their finest ugly Christmas sweaters and Santa hats.
The show included a charity drive for Realities for Children (https://www.realitiesforchildren.com).
Realities For Children provides for the emergency and ongoing support needs of children in Northern Colorado who have been abused, neglected, abandoned, or are at-risk.
According to the band’s instagram, they collected over 5 bins worth of hygiene products. I couldn’t be more proud of these three young brothers using their platform to help those in need.
They started their performance with their own alt-rock rendition of Rockin’ Around the Christmas tree set the whole crowd of ugly sweater and santa hat clad fans dancing. The rest of their set brought tons of joyful and infectious energy that had everyone smiling and dancing throughout the night.
Volores
I first saw bassist Nathen Maxwell at a little-known show called the Van’s Warped Tour in 2003 at Randall’s Island, NY. Its been 20 years since and he’s still rockin punchy bass lines, this time with his wife Shelby, a singer/songwriter in her own right. Together, they formed Volores, which won Westword’s Rock Album of the Year with AGES. They dub their style “Mountain Goth”. Two days later and Carrion Cry is still stuck in my head, if only my inner voice could belt it out as well as Shelby.
Sophie Gray
An hour before doors opened at the Bluebird, there were already fans waiting in line ready to see local denver singer/songwriter Sophie Gray. Don’t let the X markered onto her hand fool you, Sophie was purely in her element performing and having the time of her life. Each song’s lyrics were thoughtful, the music poppy and professional, and the energy was magnetic.
