Run The Jewels’ latest release, RTJ3, has been on non-stop repeat since they surprise released it on Christmas Day. It’s arguably the best work yet from the duo of Killer Mike and El-P. To say I was excited for this show would be a major understatement.
A beautiful Saturday night greeted Denver fans as they lined up to the end of the block, and milled about, posing in front of the freshly painted RTJ3 mural across the street, before doors opened.
Queen’s “We Are The Champions” might just be the most fitting entry song for RTJ, and as Mike and El-P strutted on to the stage, they were greeted with a deafening roar from the packed room. Denver Run The Jewels fans were fired up for this show. And Mike and El-P were also fired up. If the altitude was affecting them, they showed little sign of it, as the duo, along with Trackstar The DJ, slammed through sixteen songs, including nine songs from RTJ3, over the course of their hour and fifteen minute set.
I’ve been following El-P and Killer Mike since their solo days, and have been blown away by everything they’ve done both on their own and together as Run The Jewels. And they just keep getting better. RTJ3 will certainly be at or near the top of every 2017 album list, and their live performances take those studio releases to a new level. Their Feb 11, 2017 Denver Fillmore show will no doubt be at the top of my list of favorite concerts of the year.
