With thirteen studio albums behind him, including last year’s Colors, Beck could easily play a set of his biggest hits and a vast majority of the crowd would be completely satisfied. His first night of a sold out two night run at Red Rocks this week did include some of his biggest hits, like the one-two opener of “Devil’s Haircut” and “The New Pollution” and set closers “Loser” and “E-Pro.” In between, Beck went out of his way to make this a unique show, with rarely played songs and acoustic takes on hard core fan favorites like “Debra.” A solo acoustic mid-set “Raspberry Beret” was certainly the highlight for me, the crowd bathed in purple during Beck’s nod to the late Prince. Beck was in good spirits throughout the set, with plenty of banter between songs, engaging the crowd by taking requests and marveling at the beauty of Colorado and Red Rocks Amphitheatre. His relatively new backing band was tight yet playful the entire set, as they worked through songs from eight different Beck studio albums. Jenny Lewis opened the night and re-emerged during the encore medley to join Beck for a take on “Don’t You Want Me.” Beck once again proved that he’s still at the top of his game, and his not-so-subtle hints about returning next year will have his fans looking forward to another perfect September evening at Red Rocks.

I’d been watching the moon grow over the previous four nights, including three nights in the woods around Crested Butte and the previous night during Greensky Bluegrass’ second of two nights at Red Rocks. I couldn’t have asked for a better view of the full moon during Beck’s cover of Prince’s “Raspberry Beret.” Sept 24, 2018, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Morrison, CO
