I don’t always listen to crossover, but when I do, Detroit heavyweights Plague Years is high on my short list. The blackened thrashers rolled through Denver, for a Monday night set at DIY music space Seventh Circle Music Collective. With lead singer Tim Engelhardt out of the mix for a few days on this tour, guitarist Kyle Whitefoot has put down his guitar and stepped up for vocal duties. The quartet charged through a thirty minute set, with Whitefoot looking and sounding like he’s held down the front man duties a hundred times. Their set included a single from an upcoming EP (name and release date TBD).
After over a year of turning to their 2020 debut full length, Circle Of Darkness for my thrash fixes, I’m stoked to finally get a taste of these songs live, and looking forward to seeing this band again when they’re at full strength.
Brooklyn, NY doom trio Somnuri openers, guitarist/vocalist Justin Sherrell, drummer Phil SanGiacomo, and new bass player Mike G worked their way through songs from their stunning 2021 debut album Nefarious Wave (in my Top 20 of 2021 over at doomyriffs.com).
