Since their inception, Queens Of The Stone Age have produced a genre-bending concoction of desert rock grooves, soul, blues, psychedelia, and heavy rock, attracting a wide variety of music fans along the way. Six years after their last studio LP, 2017’s Villians, QOTSA treated fans with their latest studio release, the highly anticipated In Times New Roman… (released June 16 via Matador Records). The quintet hit the road in early August, on their The End Is Nero tour in support of the new record.
The band made their long-awaited return to Denver with a stop at Greenwood Village’s Fiddler’s Green Amphitheatre for a Friday night. They wasted no time setting the tone for the night, with Songs For The Deaf favorite “No One Knows”, followed by three more classic QOTSA staples, including “Sick, Sick, Sick”, “Smooth Sailing”, and “My God Is the Sun” kicking off a nearly two hour, seventeen song journey through their expansive discography. In Times New Roman… got the most action, with five songs featured in the setlist. Those new songs fit in seamlessly with the tried and true songs from throughout QOTSA’s existing catalog. The band offered up something for everyone, and spread the love across six different albums. Josh Homme seemed to be in a good spirits, with plenty of stage banter and high praise for Denver fans. The only thing that could have made this setlist more perfect would have been at least one song from their 1998 self-titled debut. The show was capped off with an encore featuring two more Songs For The Deaf favorites “God Is In The Radio” and “Go With The Flow.”
After over twenty five years of making music, Queens Of The Stone Age continue to deliver distinctive, captivating new music. Friday’s high energy set on a perfect early fall evening in Denver had all of the swagger and groove you’d expect from one of the most exciting bands in the rock and roll scene.
