Editor’s Note: My first snowboarding experience, way back in 1989, was at tiny Snowy Range Ski Area near Laramie, Wyoming. Small, independent ski areas will always have a special place in my heart. These places, and the people who run them, are truly the soul of skiing. I highly encourage anyone who skis or snowboards to watch this film.

The Best Independent Ski Areas in Colorado

While no Colorado ski areas were featured in this film, there are plenty of independent ski areas in the state for skiers and snowboarders seeking an intimate, independent experience. Here’s a list of the best independent ski areas in Colorado.

  • Arapahoe Basin – Located on Loveland Pass in Summit County, A-Basin is known for its advanced and expert terrain, but caters to skiers and riders of all levels. The Basin is perennially one of the first ski areas to open in Colorado, and almost always the last to close for the season, typically staying open late into June or early July.
  • Echo Mountain – Just outside of Idaho Springs, Echo Mountain is the closest ski and snowboard mountain to Denver.
  • Loveland Ski Area – One of the most beloved Colorado resorts, Loveland is situated at the base of Loveland Pass
  • Monarch Mountain, right on I-70, at the east end of the Eisenhower Tunnel, and offers a unique high alpine riding experience.
  • Powderhorn Mountain – Family-friendly Powderhorn sits on the Grand Mesa (the world’s largest flattop mountain), near Mesa, CO, and receives over 250 inches of snow each year. 70% of Powderhorn’s terrain caters to beginner or intermediate skiers and riders.
  • Silverton Mountain Ski Area – With steep terrain, and a backcountry experience accessed by heli and lifts, Silverton is a rite of passage for advanced skiers and snowboarders from around the globe.
  • Ski Cooper – Situated near Leadville, Cooper is the oldest ski resort in the state, and served as the training site for the famous 10th Mountain Division. You’ll enjoy no lift lines and a family-friendly vibe at Cooper.
  • Granby Ranch – Small, family-friendly resort located just down the road from Winter Park, in Granby, CO.
  • Sunlight Mountain Ski Area – You’ll find Sunlight Mountain (and no crowds or lift lines) just outside of Glenwood Springs.
  • Wolf Creek Ski Area – Wolf Creek receives a massive amount of snow, and is a bucket list destination for skiers and riders seeking deep powder and advanced terrain.

*Please let us know if we’re missing any independent Colorado resorts. We’ll add them to this list!
